Tafl: Viking Chess is a historic Scandinavian board game of asymmetric strategy. One side fields a single king and defenders. The other side fields more attackers. The goal and capture rules vary by variant, but the core objective remains clear: help the king escape or stop the king from escaping. This version supports 7, 9, 11, and 13 square boards and several common victory rules.
Pieces move like a rook in chess. Each piece moves any number of empty squares vertically or horizontally. You capture by surrounding an enemy piece on opposite sides. The king may require capture from two or four sides depending on the variant. Victory conditions may require escorting the king to any edge or to a corner of the board. The attacking side moves first and players alternate turns.
This online edition offers three play modes. Play alone against adjustable AI. Play local pass-and-play with another person on the same device. Or play live online against other players. Matches are fast to set up and reward planning, positioning, and timing. Click or tap to select and move pieces. The rules are simple to learn and offer deep strategic play for new and experienced players.
- Board sizes: 7x7, 9x9, 11x11, 13x13 options change scale and tactics.
- Asymmetric sides: Defenders protect the king while attackers try to surround him.
- Capture: Most pieces are captured by being sandwiched between two enemy pieces.
- Victory: Win by bringing the king to a designated edge or corner, or by capturing the king per variant rules.
